When it comes to organizing sub materials in the classroom, there are several approaches that can be made. I love to have extra materials for my subs along with lesson plans that I may have prepared. The reason? Sometimes kids will finish in a hurry and a sub may need extra work for them. Also, having things already prepared can help with emergency sub plans for when you need them.
Plastic Drawers
One thing that can be used in the classroom to organize sub materials is to use a plastic drawer set. These can be purchased and labeled for the sub.
You can create a drawer with sub materials and inside you can put class sets of work in folders. Label the folders and include instructions or even answer keys.
Provide pencils or any other supplies that may be needed to complete your assignments. This allows for the sub to be able to keep your classroom running in your absence. Too often behavior issues come from students not working bell-to-bell or not having the appropriate supplies to complete an assignment.
Sub Tub
Another item that you can use is a plastic file organizer to create a sub tub.
I have been using a Sub Tub in my classroom for four years now. I have folders that are labeled with Lesson 1, Lesson 2, etc. Inside, I have included class sets, which state they are not to be written on so that they can be used indefinitely without me having to repeatedly make copies.
My Sub Tub includes Emergency Lessons and materials, plus it has extra assignments for when a sub may need them. These come in handy when you have your fast finishers or even when you have students who did not bring a computer that day and your assignment is online.
If you do not want students to write on your worksheets, provide a folder with loose leaf filler paper so that it is available. You can even include a pencils (some file folder boxes have space at the top where you can store pencils like the one pictured above.
By having a way to store your sub materials can help out when you are absent. If provides your sub with a smooth work day and gives you less work when creating sub plans.
