Storytime Sunday: Hurry Up Spring Break

While many have already had their Spring Break, others have not. Here in South Carolina, many of us have our spring break about the same time as the Masters Tournament. Others, around Easter. Either way, we are waiting for that break.

This week, many students have begun to get antsy. They have also begun to fight with their best friends because they are tired of being around one another. My homeroom students are among those who have turned on one another during this time. While helping a student, another student put their best friend in a headlock because they said something about their brother. The student began crying uncontrollably. I just happened to see a colleague outside in the hall that could escort the crying student out. While I was talking to them, another pair of students got into an argument, and one student (male) decided to try to break the other’s(female’s) hand.

That same thing applies to teachers. We need a break from students. I keep saying that I am planning to spend a whole day not being around children. Even my grandbabies whom I love. I need a quiet break in a space where children don’t back talk or argue.

Yesterday, I had a class that refused to be quiet to take their test. They were talkative, disruptive, and wouldn’t even sit down to take their test. They chose to be disrespectful and argumentative when disciplined. At one point, I stated, “I’m getting tired of telling you to be quiet,” to which a student responded, “Then stop saying it!” My assistant principal was outside in the hall when this happened.

I’m just ready for a break.
