I know that sounds a little post-apocalyptic, but you teach, you know that there are multiple meanings behind that and each one feels real. We have 2 half days this week: Tuesday and Wednesday. No school on Monday. Am I personally hoping that no one shows those last 2 days? Yes! Will they show up? Yes! Why? Because parents aren’t ready for school to end.

To prove my point. We had awards day on Friday and a PBIS Fun Day for students who earned it. Out of 190 students, 92 could not attend. Now, most managed to get themselves signed out after Awards or after finding out that they could not and would not be allowed to play games or be on their phones for the 4 hours that Fun Day would last. Out of that 92, we had 20. Now, here’s the kicker. We actually had 18, but a parent brought their children up to the school after Awards and made them go to school because she didn’t have time for their nonsense. *clap, clap, clap* Hello? *clap, clap, clap* We can’t teach them because of that either, hence, they didn’t get Fun Day!

And the students did not like being treated like “prisoners.” I just smiled. I took them to the bathroom every hour and a half. They got to go outside and burn off some energy. I was good to them!

In all sincerity, I hope that those who still need us as a safe haven show up. I hope that those who aren’t ready for school to be over show up to hang on to that small piece of structure that they need. And for those that don’t show up, I hope they are well, and I hope that they have a fabulous summer. And I’ll be seeing them all next year.
