Quite a few years ago, I attended a conference where the guest speaker was Kim Campbell. Her presentations that day were a gamechanger for me. I had struggled to reach a few a students, but I didn’t quite know what to do. Without reaching them, there was no way I could control the classroom the way that I needed to.

I took notes on her presentations, and then later, I purchased her book, If you can’t manage them, you can’t teach them. This book made the difference.

I’m not sure why the college I attended didn’t focus enough on classroom management. Instead, we were presented with theories and applications based on the theories of educational gurus who invented said practices, but these were very outdated. Practical application didn’t apply in modern society. Mostly because the students were not the same.

Generations vary, and what worked when I was in school could never apply to today’s students because things are not the same. It’s one reason why Campbell’s book was so helpful.

Campbell focuses on not only building a relationship with the students, but also on making sure that students participate. By building trust with the students, you build respect and community.
